Flocked Swab vs Cotton Swab
Flocked swabs and cotton swabs differ in tip form: a flocked tip is covered with short fibres that give a brush-like surface, while a cotton tip is wound cotton. This comparison explains that tip-form distinction in general terms, for buyers deciding which tip form their protocol specifies. It does not recommend one form over the other and it does not describe the performance of either form.
Two tip forms, one collection job
Both tip forms collect samples; they differ in how the tip surface is made and therefore in how buyers talk about them. Flocked tips are discussed in terms of their fibre surface, cotton tips in terms of their wound fibre. The collection purpose and the protocol determine which form is specified, and a buyer who knows the purpose but not the tip form should describe the purpose and ask the supplier to confirm the form, rather than choosing from a general description.
Enquiry points for each tip form
Whichever tip form is specified, the enquiry should answer the same neighbouring questions: tip material, shaft, sterile condition, packaging, quantity and collection purpose in general terms. The flocked swab guide covers the flocked form in more detail, and the general cotton swab pages cover the cotton form. A buyer comparing the two forms should send the same specification questions for both and compare the written confirmations.
A note on material words
Tip-form words and tip-material words are different things and are sometimes confused: flocked describes a tip form, while nylon or rayon describe tip materials. An enquiry should state both where both are known — the form and the material — because either one alone leaves the specification incomplete. The rayon tipped swabs page covers the rayon material topic.
Before you enquire
Specifications, available variants, minimum order quantity and lead time are not listed on this page, because they are confirmed order by order. In your enquiry, please state the tip material and shape you need, the shaft material and length range, whether sterile or non-sterile supply is required, the packaging form you expect, the quantity you plan to order, and the destination for delivery. That information lets the supplier confirm, in writing, what can be supplied before any order is placed.
Please note: variant names on this page describe enquiry topics and search terms used by buyers. They are not a stocked catalogue, and no variant, size, material or packaging form should be read as available until it has been confirmed in your enquiry.
Supplier information, not medical advice. This site is written for business buyers of swabs and sampling consumables. Sampling procedures, test selection and result interpretation follow your laboratory or clinical protocol and the instructions of the test you use. Nothing on this page recommends a test, a diagnosis or a treatment.
